Church and worship multi-mic phase: sanctuary close/OH/room vs stream and broadcast fold

Worship vocals, band, and room mics feel rich in the sanctuary and in FOH headphones. On the stream or broadcast bus, phones, YouTube, and Facebook Live often thin the pastor, collapse choir body, or hollow the band. That is usually polarity and arrival time between close, OH, and room paths that share the same content a few milliseconds apart, plus a stereo mix that was never folded to mono before send. Fix polarity and small delays first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo beds before mono fold.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a worship compressor, not a widener, and not a substitute for sanctuary gain structure or mono audition of the stream bus. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.

What church / worship phase failure sounds like

Fast mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Solo the stream / broadcast / matrix bus (not only FOH). Flip a utility to mono.
  2. A/B close muted vs open under OH/room. Note what disappears: speech chest, choir body, kick/bass, pad warmth.
  3. Solo pairs: pastor lav vs boom, choir spots vs OH, band OH vs room, stereo keys vs mono fold.
  4. Check correlation on the stream bus, then with music muted vs unmuted (correlation meters).

Order of operations (before spectral phase rotation)

1. Polarity between close, OH, and room

Flip speech lav vs boom, choir spots vs OH, or band close vs room when body returns immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase. Related live habit: live FOH / foldback / stream.

2. Small delay align closes to the room / OH

Close mics arrive earlier than OH or sanctuary room. A few samples of delay on closes (or nudge to the room) often restores body better than any widener. Different job from spectral repair: vs time-align.

3. One hero speech path to the stream bus

Do not send lav + boom + room all hot into the livestream matrix. Pick a hero for speech, keep backups muted or low. Parallel stacks are classic hollow-voice on phone fold. Related: dual-mic phase, podcast dual-mic.

4. Prefer OH/room as the band image; quieter stage closes

Stage closes should color, not replace OH/room for the stream mix. If every close sits at full level under loud OH, mono fold almost always hollows. Pull closes first. Related: overhead & room.

5. Skip wideners and Haas on worship beds before fold

Short-delay width and stereo imagers make sanctuary headphones huge and phones hollow. Guides: vs imagers, Haas vs phase repair.

6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo bed (keys, pads, stereo choir print, stereo room) must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B, rotator bypassed vs engaged.

Worship stream checklist (to send)

1. Label sanctuary vs stream paths

Name closes, OH, room, and matrix sends so operators know what hits the livestream. Ambiguous stacks get left open and comb on fold.

2. Mono-check stream bus alone, then with music

Solo speech in mono. Then open band and choir in mono. Note fights between speech and music beds, not only inside one group. Related: choir / ensemble.

3. Watch phone and social destinations

Most remote viewers hear mono or near-mono. Guides: YouTube / social, Twitch / OBS, phone / BT.

4. Optional null / mono workflow before service

Host-agnostic habit before you go live: DAW null-test + mono-check, master bus mono checklist.

When NOT to use PHIXER here

Quick path: Solo stream bus in mono → polarity close vs OH/room → delay-align closes → one hero speech path → quieter stage closes under hero OH/room → skip Haas/imagers → mono-check with band/choir → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on a bed → fold again for YouTube / Facebook Live / phone.
